17: The Binding Agreement

Shrouded in an endless blanket of snow, the White Mountains stretched from the northernmost tip of Drifter’s Kingdom to the frigid waters of the Western Sea. Located in the center of the mountain range, two hundred miles northwest of the Fortress of Lyano was the legendary Mine of Emerin. Long ago, a solitary dwarf exploring the frozen peaks stumbled upon the entrance to the mine. Within, he unearthed an extremely rare ore unlike any other known to him or his brethren. After refining the mineral, small red jewels were found. The dwarf affectionately dubbed the gem, the blood ruby, owing to its deep wine red color and natural teardrop form.

Those who once swarmed the mountains in search of fortune were now prone to avoid the area due to the low temperatures, high winds, and horde of snares and enchantments used to fortify the interior. Adding to the dwarves’ sense of security were ancient treaties established by the kings of old. As forgers and caretakers of the world currency, the dwarves were considered ambassadors of each land. To intrude upon their territory was considered an act of treason punishable by the most extreme of consequences.

Dwarves of Emerin’s direct lineage continued in their ancestor’s footsteps, mining year round and trading their rubies with the four Kingdoms. It was customary for those who worked the mine to hold a feast on the anniversary in which Emerin first discovered the blood ruby, celebrating the fact that in over five hundred years no one had successfully purged the mine and plundered their treasure. They often claimed one would need to be able to walk through walls to do so.
